G’day, Ballarat! For those heading back to work this week, I hope the inbox hasn’t been too brutal and there’s still time to ease back into the usual rhythm. Speaking of rhythm, how good was the Summer Sundays kick off last weekend. A great crowd and even better live performances. As we wait for the next one, let’s make sure we’re drinking plenty of water and staying cool during this heat wave.

FEATURE STORY

Forage and Feast Is Back for Summer

Forage & Feast

If your ideal summer involves eating well and getting out of town, this one’s worth circling. Forage and Feast has returned, bringing a month long celebration of food, wine and local producers across the Central Highlands from 12 January to 15 February.

The program includes more than 130 events, from relaxed long lunches and farm tours to hands on workshops like wild fermented bread, seasonal cooking and produce tastings. There are also accommodation experiences and paddock to plate moments that let you meet the people behind the food.

It’s designed to be slow, social and stress-free. No big crowds or flashy gimmicks, just good produce, good stories and a reason to explore the region a little more deeply this summer.

From Ballarat to the Big Stage

Ballarat Times

Ballarat youngster Josh Woodhart has just been selected for the most senior treble performing group of the Australian Boys Choir, which is no small feat. Josh joined the choir at nine, but he’s been singing since he could talk. His family says the experience has built confidence, friendships and a genuine love for music. Not bad for a local kid who simply enjoys having a sing and giving it a go.

Ballarat Musos Get a Big Boost With Be Hear Now 2026

Musicians living, working or studying in Ballarat have a new chance to take their sound further. Expressions of interest are open for Be Hear Now 2026, a professional development program that helps local artists refine their craft and grow their careers.

This year’s edition includes new partnerships with the Victorian Music Development Office and Music Victoria, bringing masterclasses and industry perks to successful applicants. Five artists or bands will be chosen to record, mix, master and release original singles with mentoring and promotional support. Applications close 30 January so now’s the time to have a crack.

Summer Sundays Series: Week Two

Week two of Summer Sundays shifts the focus firmly to the music, with a fresh lineup taking over the Botanical Gardens this Sunday from 3pm. Soulful powerhouse Ella Thompson headlines alongside Sydney alt country favourite Andy Golledge. Local flavour comes courtesy of Ballarat indie folk artist Blue Ren, while The Black Sea Country Club brings quirky, nostalgic storytelling with a retro edge. Same relaxed setting, completely new sounds, and a strong excuse to settle in for the afternoon.

Free Public Transport for Under 18s

From January 2026, kids and teens under 18 can travel for free on public transport across Victoria. Trains, buses and trams are all included, as long as they’re using a Youth myki and tapping on and off as usual. For parents juggling school, sport and weekend plans, this could quietly save a fair chunk over the year. One of those changes that makes everyday life just a bit easier.

Heads Up for V/Line Travellers

There are planned disruptions on the Ballarat line during January, so some services will run a little differently and replacement coaches will pop up at times. Nothing dramatic, but enough to catch you out if you’re not expecting it. Best bet is to check the V Line page before you travel and save yourself the headache.

This neat Alfredton townhouse doesn’t come with a big backyard but it more than makes up for that with two bathrooms, a double garage, and a very tidy price of $430,000. Inside feels light and easy to live in, with clever use of space and a location that’s hard to beat for shops, schools and transport. A solid pick if you want convenience without paying premium land prices.

Howitt Street Gets Its Sushi Fix

It was about time someone opened a sushi spot on Howitt Street. In early November, Yutaka Sawa quietly soft opened at 1221C Howitt Street, Wendouree, bringing a Japanese takeaway option to the area. The menu covers sushi rolls, curry dons, ramen, bento boxes and plenty of familiar Japanese mains. It’s takeaway only and open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 8pm, making it an easy go to for lunch or dinner.
